新加坡英語地位和功能的嬗變及其國家認(rèn)同建構(gòu)

【摘要】:新加坡建國之初,移民混雜,種族交流閉塞。為此,新加坡致力于建立高度的國家認(rèn)同,以謀求國家的生存和發(fā)展。在新加坡制定的一系列謀求生存和發(fā)展的政策中,語言政策的貢獻尤為關(guān)鍵,尤其是英語的貢獻。本篇論文分析英語在新加坡國家認(rèn)同建構(gòu)中的重要作用,及其對中國英語教學(xué)的啟示意義。根據(jù)Braj Kachru的英語三圈理論,新加坡屬于英語外圈國家,英語作為第二語言主要通過學(xué)校教育獲得,其主要功能有管理功能、人際功能和工具功能。在國家認(rèn)同的建構(gòu)過程中,新加坡不斷調(diào)整英語的地位和功能,以使英語更好地服務(wù)于新加坡的政治、經(jīng)濟發(fā)展。在1950s-1960s,英語被確立為新加坡官方語言,從此得以名正言順的在新加坡廣泛傳播。1966年,新加坡推行強制性雙語教育政策,英語成為學(xué)校教育中占主導(dǎo)地位的語言。2000年,為防止新加坡英語的使用危及新加坡人使用標(biāo)準(zhǔn)英語的能力,新加坡政府發(fā)起“講正確英語”運動。然而,英語在新加坡的發(fā)展已經(jīng)成為一種不可阻擋的趨勢。在過去的二三十年里,英語已經(jīng)成為新加坡事實上的國語,同時也是種族通用語言,教育媒介語言;出于新加坡轉(zhuǎn)口貿(mào)易和經(jīng)濟發(fā)展的需要,英語逐漸發(fā)展成為新加坡的經(jīng)濟語言,這使英語在新加坡的重要性更加突顯。新加坡英語被當(dāng)作新加坡身份的標(biāo)志。至此,英語在新加坡實現(xiàn)了工具功能向情感性功能的完美轉(zhuǎn)化。新加坡政府將英語應(yīng)用到種族問題、教育的發(fā)展和經(jīng)濟的繁榮上,推動了新加坡國家認(rèn)同的成功建構(gòu);從而使新加坡境內(nèi)不同種族背景的人團結(jié)在新加坡認(rèn)同下,忠誠于新加坡,服從國家的領(lǐng)導(dǎo),共同謀求新加坡的經(jīng)濟繁榮和政治發(fā)展。全球化背景下,英語已經(jīng)成為中國走向世界的通行證,高水平的英語能力至關(guān)重要。中國作為英語擴展圈國家,英語作為最重要的外語主要是通過學(xué)校教育獲得。獲得高水平的英語能力,對中國英語教學(xué)來說,是目標(biāo)也是挑戰(zhàn)。中國英語教學(xué)應(yīng)該學(xué)習(xí)新加坡成功經(jīng)驗,在新的歷史時期,重新審視英語在中國的地位和功能,相應(yīng)地調(diào)整教學(xué)目標(biāo),以培養(yǎng)學(xué)生高水平的英語能力。同時,中國英語教學(xué)還應(yīng)在中國“走出去”和“引進來”的政策號召下,引導(dǎo)學(xué)生端正對中國英語的態(tài)度,以使其更好地服務(wù)于中國文化的傳播。
[Abstract]:At the beginning of Singapore's founding, immigrants were mixed and ethnic exchanges were blocked. For this reason, Singapore was committed to building a high degree of national identity in order to seek the survival and development of the country. In the series of policies formulated by Singapore to seek survival and development, The contribution of language policy is particularly crucial, especially the contribution of English. This paper analyzes the important role of English in the construction of Singapore's national identity and its implications for Chinese English teaching. According to Braj Kachru's three-circle English theory, Singapore belongs to the English-speaking outer circle. English as a second language is mainly obtained through school education. Its main functions include management, interpersonal and instrumental functions. Singapore constantly adjusts the status and function of English in order to better serve the political and economic development of Singapore. In 1950s-1960 s, English was established as the official language of Singapore. In 2000, in order to prevent the use of Singaporean English from endangering Singaporeans' ability to use standard English, The Singapore government launched the "speak right English" campaign. However, the development of English in Singapore has become an irresistible trend. In the past two or three decades, English has become the de facto national language of Singapore. It is also a racial language and a medium of education. Due to the needs of Singapore's entrepot trade and economic development, English has gradually developed into the economic language of Singapore. This accentuates the importance of English in Singapore, which is regarded as a symbol of Singapore's identity. English has realized the perfect transformation from instrumental function to affective function in Singapore. The Singapore government has applied English to racial problems, the development of education and the prosperity of economy, which has promoted the successful construction of Singapore's national identity. So that people of different ethnic backgrounds in Singapore can unite under Singapore's identity, loyal to Singapore, submit to the leadership of the country and work together for Singapore's economic prosperity and political development.Under the background of globalization, English has become China's passport to the world. A high level of English proficiency is of paramount importance. As an English extension country, English as the most important foreign language is mainly acquired through school education. For Chinese English teaching, it is both a goal and a challenge. China English teaching should learn from the successful experience of Singapore, re-examine the position and function of English in China in the new historical period, and adjust the teaching objectives accordingly. At the same time, Chinese English teaching should guide students to correct their attitude towards Chinese English under the policy of "going out" and "bringing in". In order to better serve the spread of Chinese culture.
