[Abstract]:Since its birth in France in 1895, the Year of the Movie has been closely related to literary works. Jane Austen is one of the most enduring darlings in film adaptation. As one of the most well-known female writers in the history of British literature in the 19th century, Jane Austen's works have a unique feminine perspective, exquisite writing and romantic feelings. Her novel Mansfield Manor was published in 1814, adapted into a TV short in 1983, and adapted into a movie in 1999 and 2007. However, the controversial nature of the novel itself is doomed to be a bumpy road to film adaptation.
From the point of view of film adaptation, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the novel version of Mansfield Manor, the film version adapted in 1999 and the film version adapted in 2007. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between film adaptation and novel text from the three perspectives of background adaptation, plot adaptation and character adaptation. Comparing the two films, the paper analyzes the purpose, the reasons and the social and cultural significance of the adaptation.
The introduction mainly introduces the author's works, the theory of film adaptation, the research status at home and abroad, the research methods adopted in this paper, the purpose of this study, and the framework of this paper.
The first chapter is a comparative study of the differences between the two film adaptation works in the background adaptation, namely, social background and natural environment. The 1999 film of Rhodes Code focuses on the social background of the abolition of slavery in the 19th century and combines with the feminist movement at that time, so the whole film is a heavy social problem and comparison. In contrast, McDonald's 2007 adaptation is full of light-hearted romantic romantic comedy, and the film's tone is lively, disparate from the 1999 edition. The adaptation of the background lays the foundation for the development of the whole plot.
Chapter Two explores the adaptation of the two film adaptation versions according to the three ways of plot adaptation, i.e. plot deletion, plot addition and plot change. Each of the three ways serves the needs of the story development and reveals the social background and natural environment settings of the film in these changes. Rhodes code deletes an important role and adds other plots to emphasize the subject of slavery, while MacDonald changes minor plots for romantic love stories. These plot adaptations reflect the theme of the film, reveal the purpose of the adapter, and suggest the tone of the film.
The third chapter mainly analyzes the appearance and language of the characters in the two adapted works from the perspective of character adaptation. For example, Fanny Potts in the Rhodes Code movies is actively fighting for female identity, while Fanny in the MacDonald movies is silently waiting for love to endure; therefore, the two directors are trying to show Fanny Potts'individuality. In order to better display their roles on the screen, the two adapters have designed the appearance and theme of the characters suitable for their film themes. The film lets the audience see the appearance of the characters and hear the language of the characters intuitively. The appearance of the characters deepens their personality characteristics, makes the screen characters more vivid and impressive, promotes the development of the whole plot, and properly expresses the message the adapter wants to convey to the audience.
The conclusion summarizes the full text and explores the reasons for Jane Austen's popularity in the film world and the reasons for her adaptation of the novel Mansfield Manor. There are various reasons behind such adaptation, including social and historical conditions, different interpretations of the novel by the adapter, the economic goals the adapter wants to achieve, and whether the Taoist audience can accept the adaptions they have made. This is also the reason why other literary works should be considered in literary adaptation. It points out that the film adaptation of Mansfield Manor enriches Jane Austen's novel and film studies, and influences scholars'deeper understanding and study of literary works. Finally, this paper points out the social and historical significance, theoretical and practical significance of film adaptation.
