[Abstract]:Metaphor has been one of the objects studied by many scholars since ancient times. Many scholars believe that metaphor is a rhetorical device, and on this basis put forward metaphorical rhetoric theory, such as Aristotle's theory of comparison, Quintirian's theory of substitution and Richards's theory of interaction. Since the publication of metaphor for our existence, the cognitive theory of metaphor has been accepted by more and more linguists. Lakoff and Johnson put forward that metaphor is a cognitive phenomenon which is a cognitive tool for human beings to perceive the world and construct concepts. Conceptual metaphor, which is abstracted from everyday metaphorical expressions, exists in human thinking and has universal applicability, such as "Life is a journey". Love is an abstract emotion and an eternal topic. Throughout the ages, songs of love and praise of love are endless. Based on the comparative analysis of the conceptual metaphors of love in English and Chinese, the author finds that there are similarities and differences in love metaphors between English and Chinese. Its commonness is mainly reflected in: 1. English and Chinese love metaphors have a common cognitive basis, that is to say, the relationship between things is constructed on the basis of association and imagination. II. Although English and Chinese are two different language systems, they can understand love with different conceptual systems, such as "plant" and "human body". Its difference is mainly reflected in: 1. English and Chinese have their own unique conceptual metaphors of love. II. Under similar conceptual metaphors of love, there are differences between English and Chinese in terms of their specific expressions, that is, the representation of metaphors. Through further analysis and discussion, the paper concludes that conceptual metaphors created by different cultural groups based on body experience and life experience have the same characteristics, but are influenced by geographical environment, philosophy and religious culture. Due to the influence of factors such as production mode, metaphor has cultural differences. In this paper, we first have a deeper understanding of the important role of metaphor in the construction of human abstract concepts, and then we have a further understanding of the similarities and differences in cognitive patterns between English and Chinese. I hope to contribute to the understanding and communication of language teaching and English-Chinese culture.
