[Abstract]:Richard Yates is a great American writer in the Age of anxiety and a spokesman for America in the 1930s and 1960s. As a writer with strong autobiographical factors, Yates, while faithfully recording the mainstream American life in the middle of the 20th century, has more or less permeated his self-consciousness in his works. Because of his own unique experience, Yates longed to escape from the political atmosphere of the 1950s and strengthened his escape consciousness. The Road of Revolution is the product of the dual repression of the times and individuals. So the road to revolution not only shows Yates' personal sense of escape, but also the escape consciousness of an era. The 1950s has long been labeled "dreary and conservative" politics. The middle class, because of its unique social status, is shivering in this era. But the middle class is not a monolithic one. The "new middle class", characterized by knowledge and skills, has become divided within itself, some of which are drawn closer to the old-school middle class characterized mainly by capital, and their way of life is to keep one's share and keep one's own. Part of the radical younger generation drew closer, with a strong rebellious spirit. This internal division of the middle class reveals a torrent behind the dreary conservative 1950s. It was this torrent that made the 1950s and '60s, rather than break. However, due to various factors, such as the times, the rebellious spirit of this part of the middle class did not take practical radical measures, only a symbolic "revolution". This rebellious spirit is manifested in the road to revolution as a sense of escape. " The image of window is the carrier of escape consciousness. The metaphorical meaning of "window" in "the Road of Revolution" is very rich. On the one hand, the "window" in the works is the medium of viewing the external world, on the other hand, the closure is the obstacle to escape from the present predicament. In addition to the "window", the ubiquitous window symbolizes Foucault's "eyes of power", which is the confinement, surveillance and persecution of people by social norms. As a metaphorical level, the window can be used to isolate, monitor and escape. This thesis is divided into three parts, corresponding to the triple metaphorical function of "window", which also reflects the living state of the characters in "the Road of Revolution" and the atmosphere of the era in the 1950s. With the help of textual interpretation, this paper analyzes the living state of the characters in the Road of Revolution from the perspective of the triple metaphorical function of the window, and further explores that era.
