[Abstract]:Does the term "no length stick" make sense? This expression seems to be extremely common, its grammatical structure and lexical elements are extremely ordinary, but think carefully, what is a stick without length? Nobody knows that this is obviously an illogical expression. There is no shortage of illogical expressions in natural language. With regard to the meaning of illogical expressions, according to Wittgenstein, we cannot imagine or understand illogical things; thus illogical "sticks without length" are unimaginable and meaningless. If illogical expressions are really unimaginable, meaningless expressions, then the equally illogical "sun from the west" should also be unimaginable and meaningless; however, "the sun comes out from the west". As a common saying passed down from generation to generation in Chinese, it is undeniable that we can imagine (we can imagine the situation where the sun comes out from the west), a meaningful expression. Thus, contradictions arise over whether illogical language makes sense. Why is there such a contradiction, and how to solve it? Can illogical expressions be imagined, are they really unthinkable and meaningless? This paper holds that illogical expressions can not simply be defined as meaningless expressions, but they can actually make them rich in meaning. To prove this argument, this paper first refutes Wittgenstein's theory that illogical expression is meaningless. Then the practical use of illogical idioms in both Chinese and English is used to prove that illogical expressions are meaningful. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, delineates the scope and object of the research, and expounds the purpose and significance of the research. Chapter two summarizes the few researches on the meaning of illogical expressions at home and abroad, mainly on Wittgenstein. In the third chapter, Wittgenstein's theory of illogical expression is discussed and refuted one by one. Chapter four further demonstrates that illogical expression is meaningful and meaningful through the use of illogical idioms in Chinese and English. Then it discusses the psychological approach to the meaning of such illogical idioms. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, summarizes the significance of this paper, points out the shortcomings of this paper and puts forward some suggestions for further study.
