《勿失良辰》是索爾·貝婁著名的中篇小說之一。本文著眼于猶太文化和美國文化的雙重語境,不僅揭示了猶太民族的生存困境,同時也揭示了整個西方社會人們的生存困境,這正是貝婁在《勿失良辰》中對世界文學(xué)做出的巨大貢獻(xiàn)。 從猶太文化層面來看,小說中幾乎每個人物都處于身體和精神雙重流放的狀態(tài)并受到大屠殺意識的影響。從美國文化層面來看,主人公湯米是一個為自己的美國夢而奮斗但最后夢想破滅的典型人物。同時,愛默生思想中的個人主義精神,對靈魂、對過去與現(xiàn)在的看法影響著小說中的每一個人,在泰姆金身上體現(xiàn)得最為明顯。文中論及了文化磨合同化,通過猶太文化與美國文化的沖突及文明與野蠻的沖突充分得以體現(xiàn)。文中最后揭示了《勿失良辰》的世界性。在《勿失良辰》的修正版本中,貝婁刪去了猶太民族的標(biāo)志—大衛(wèi)之星,異化主題從作品人物生動地展現(xiàn)出來,從而得出結(jié)論:《勿失良辰》是超越民族的,揭示了人類普遍的生活窘境。
