本論文認為語言是個多層構造的復雜系統(tǒng)，語言研究的主要目的之一便在于揭開個各界面的互動規(guī)律。在優(yōu)選論（OT）的框架下，本論文通過建立句法和信息結構的約束條件來探討句法和信息結構的互動界面。本論文的分析主要基于句法成分的排序，不涉及音系、形態(tài)和詞匯的語義實現(xiàn)方式。本論文采用標準OT句法的假設，認為語言輸出的表層結構受制于普遍語法（UG）的窄式X’理論，CP和IP范疇以外的功能詞組范疇本文將不涉及。與標準OT句法理論不同的是，本文在輸入系統(tǒng)的賦值上，采用詞匯函項語法（LFG）的框架，在輸入系統(tǒng)中納入語法功能和信息結構的賦值。本論文認為信息結構屬語言系統(tǒng)的一個獨立層面，與句法、語義和語法功能等結構一起共同參與競爭，生成最優(yōu)的表層形式。根據(jù)Choi（1996）提出的信息結構系統(tǒng)，本文認為依據(jù)不同的句法表現(xiàn)，信息結構應包含話題（topic）、尾部（tail）、對比焦點（contrastive focus）和信息焦點（presentational focus）。話題以認知的方式定義為知識庫中的鏈接和參照點，在句法結構中通常嫁接于最高投射的左側或右側。焦點被認為是表達形式中最具信息值且?guī)в兄匾舻木浞ǔ?..
