[Abstract]:At the end of the 16 th century, Catholic Jesuit missionaries first arrived in Macao with European merchant ships and tried to preach in the mainland through Guangzhou. In order to better promote the development of missionary, they published various books and periodicals in Guangzhou and Australia. Jesuit scholar Luo Mingjian first printed books in Guangzhou and Macao with traditional Chinese engraving printing, which opened the prologue of Western missionaries' publishing activities in China. In 1588, Fan Lian brought the western advanced movable type printing machines to Macao. As a result, Macao became a bridgehead for modern printing equipment. But because of the controversy of etiquette and the influence of the Qing government, the publishing of Catholicism came to a standstill in the 18 th century. It was not until the beginning of the 19 th century that Morrison, a Protestant missionary, came to China to set off another craze for Western missionaries to publish books in Guangzhou and Australia. Not only did he set up the first publishing house in China to print Chinese books in lead lettering, but he also introduced stone printing machines into China for the first time. Western missionaries published books in Guangzhou and Australia, which played a positive role in Chinese printing and publishing industry and cultural exchanges between China and the West.
