Many of the theories appear to challenge and compete with one another, yet they actually turn out to be complementary. All these theorie help people see through the various issues of world politics by identifying its component parts and explaining how they interact.

Since late 1980s, postmodernism has exerted great influence upon Western international relations theory. Ashley, Derian, among other theorists, drew on postmodernist philosophers such as Nitchze, Faucult and Derrida and reinterpreted the basic concepts and main issues of international relations theory, which prepared intellectually for the rise of constructivism in international relations theory in 1990s.

Up to now, Scholars has constructed many separate “islands of theories", such as the “custom union theory", the “optimal currency area theory" and the "fiscal federalism". In the meantime, there are also theories of functionalism, neo-functionalism and intergovernmentalism in international political study field based mainly on the studies of European history of...

Regionalism has been fruitfully inquired in western international relation study circles in the past 50 years, but only limited in a few disciplines. Up to now, Scholars has constructed many separate “islands of theories", such as the “custom union theory", the “optimal currency area theory" and the "fiscal federalism". In the meantime, there are also theories of functionalism, neo-functionalism and intergovernmentalism in international political study field based mainly on the studies of European history of regional economic integration. The current up-trend is likely to be synthetic trans-disciplinary study. International political economy (IPE), for its synthetic nature, will prove to be a revolutionary theoretical approach for us to study the new regionalism.

在過去的半個世紀(jì)中 ,西方國際關(guān)系理論界對“地區(qū)主義”進行了卓有成效的探索。探索主要從國際經(jīng)濟學(xué)和國際政治學(xué)的不同學(xué)科領(lǐng)域進行 ,構(gòu)建了一些頗具解釋力的“理論島” ,如 :國際經(jīng)濟學(xué)圍繞地區(qū)經(jīng)濟一體化而提出的“關(guān)稅同盟論”、“最佳貨幣區(qū)論”和“財政聯(lián)邦主義”等 ;國際政治學(xué)以歐洲地區(qū)一體化歷史為藍(lán)本提出的“功能主義”、“新功能主義”和“政府間主義”等。新的研究趨勢則是走向跨學(xué)科綜合研究。國際政治經(jīng)濟學(xué)的整合思路已經(jīng)引發(fā)了一場靜悄悄的革命 ,勢必成為我們研究新地區(qū)主義的重要理論途徑。
